A Fool-Proof Guide To Thrift Shopping

I am someone that can say with moderate certainty that more than half of my wardrobe is from a thrift or vintage store. Thrifting has become insanely popular during the last decade especially with the emergence of media that praises the vintage fashion movement, and the importance of sustainable fashion making it's way into the forefront of the general consumer agenda. With that being said there is so much literature on the benefits of thrifting whether that be monetary or environmental but so few people give genuine advice on how to build a decent wardrobe with thrifted clothing. I have compiled three easy steps that I wish I had known when I began to thrift shop that might make your thrifting experience a little easier.

1. Figure out your personal style.

It helps if you know what kind of pieces you want to be on the lookout for. If you like really baggy and laidback looks then you might want to go to the mens section and if you like really vintage looks then the old purses and cool 80's sweaters might be for you.

2. Start with basic pieces.

This is relevant to any style, thrift stores vary greatly in terms of available items and style variety but most thrift stores have the basics like a simple black T-shirt, or the ever iconic grandma sweater. So start out with buying the basics whether that be a Y2K inspired tank top to be casual or a blazer for possible job interviews.

3. Manage your expectations/ never have a specific piece in mind.

This is the most important piece of advice I can give any aspiring thrift connoisseur, do not go into a thrift store with a specific list. If you go to a random Goodwill and expect to find the most chic black leather trench coat you have ever seen your feelings are likely to be hurt when the only have old rain coats and hoodies. Be open to any new finds and be hopeful that you will find something beautiful for your wardrobe but do not have a specific list.
